This is where being able to sketch or at least manipulate
placticine comes in handy. If you want to use Metaform, sketch the
critter from the two main views them break the body down into primatives
(cubes/triangles and spheres). Use that sketch as a starting point for
metaform taking into consideration a cube is a sphere etc.. ;-). From
then on in it's a matter of slicing, bevelling, pulling and prodding..
Do this for all the smooth organic pieces, you can then use traditional
tools to finish the model and add all the non-organic stuff. Adding
armor to a creature REALLY makes it easier as it breaks up the organic
portions into managable pieces.
You can also model with your favorite childhood putty to your
hearts content. Make the basic form and, after covering it with a light
coat of vaseline (or your favorite lubricant!) apply a couple of coats of
latex. I lay the resulting latex mold in a formed sandbox and fill it
(I should mention that I only do half the figure and mirror it later) with
spray insulating foam. You can then slice up the foam and digitize it (with
a pad, camera or even by holding it up to the screen!). Then skin the
sucker. It seems like one hell of a process but it, with my metaform skills,
is faster than the first option.
Well, gee. I almost feel like I'm obligated to make a mac vs pc
comment just to fit in.....
